If you have not heard of Mastery Learning, you are not alone.  Introduced 50 years ago, its concepts are successfully practiced as an educational approach by some schools (K-12). In the area of adult learning, however, this topic is rarely discussed, and remains relatively unknown as a training option.

Robert Cooperman wants to open this discussion and introduce you to Mastery Learning. His fine-tuned presentation, Mastery Learning in the Adult Classroom, originally presented at the State of Ohio Training Association (SOTA) in September, 2011, explores the history and basic tenets of a Mastery Learning program. His interactive presentation includes group exercises for nearly all the major topics, and exposes you to tools - such as the Table of Specifications - needed for a Mastery Learning program.

While making the case for Mastery Learning, Robert will review the significant challenges of adopting these techniques. Mastery Learning was conceptualized for the K-12 educational framework, and would need to be refitted into the adult learning framework of training design, development, and delivery. Implementing a Mastery Learning process requires a culture shift, particularly in your organization’s relationship with the training unit and its investment in employee development.

Mastery Learning came to Robert’s attention when his daughter was accepted to the Phoenix Middle School in Worthington, Ohio. The school applies Mastery Learning to hold students accountable, and seeks to instill intrinsic motivation, instead of relying on external motivators such as competing for top grades. Given its record of success in K-12 education, Robert quickly saw its possibilities for adult learning programs.

Could Mastery Learning be applied for your organization or clients?” You decide.

The Presenter is Robert Cooperman. He is is the Training Academy Program Director for the Ohio Office of Budget and Management (OBM).
