Letter from the President
Greetings ASTD Central Ohio Chapter Members and Guests.
We began this year with enthusiasm and eagerness to fulfill our purpose of being Central Ohio’s leader in workplace learning and performance. With your help and involvement we can become a major resource for guidance and information in the training and development field. Your ideas, suggestions, knowledge, and involvement are critical to our success.
As we all know, technology in our field grows and changes at an astounding pace. Who could have foreseen the impact that social media such as LinkedIn, Facebook, blogs, and Twitter are having on our world. Not only must we keep up, we must look into the future and be prepared for what may be coming next. It is certain that we will be using the latest technology in one way or another, whether it’s teaching others, creating course materials, or managing a cutting edge training department. We realize that with this fast-paced change, our members face significant challenges that we must help them address with clarity, foresight and leadership.READ MORE

Lessons in LUV and Leadership
from the 2010 ASTD International Conference
By: Amy Franko, Impact Instruction Group
Colleen Barrett is perhaps the most memorable person I met in 2010. She’s the President Emerita and Corporate Secretary (how that’s for a title?) of Southwest Airlines, and the only woman of her ranking at a major US airline.
I had the opportunity to learn some key leadership lessons from her at this year’s ASTD international conference. Her session with Ken Blanchard really stuck with me, “Bringing Love to Leadership: Servant Leadership in Action at Southwest Airlines.”
Colleen isn’t the typical power executive, with her flowing silver ponytail and wearing a sweater covered with embroidered hearts.
In a soft-spoken style, she delivered a powerful message about living leadership and values – and it’s why Southwest is the only US airline in the past decade to grow and sustain profitability.
What can our organizations learn? I’ll share with you 3 areas key to Southwest’s success: READ MORE

Volunteer Spotlight
Lisa Gearhart, Gearhart Training
Central Ohio ASTD Webmaster
As a new member to the Central Ohio ASTD, Lisa Gearhart has accepted the position of website administrator. Lisa has been in the training and development arena since 1990. She has a wealth of cross-industry training and consulting experience including strong business acumen, innovative ISD capabilities, and the ability to program in all current Windows development tools.
Her early years were spent in various design, development, and project management roles at Goal Systems. The past 15 years were spent creating and managing web-based training, instructor-led training, videos, wikis, and forums for the server, workstation, storage, data warehousing, and software business units at Compaq/HP. In addition, Lisa helped create the HTML and Publisher/Lectora templates used for all HP web-based development, and she managed the vendor operational guidelines and parameters for a six million dollar sales training pipeline. During her entire training career, Lisa maintained her own training company focusing on web-based and instructor-led training solutions. After twenty years, she recently broke away from the corporate world to concentrate on taking her own training company to the next level. It will be an interesting new adventure!
Lisa and her husband and daughter reside in Upper Arlington and are very active in the community. They manage the PTO website for the school, the website for their swim club, and are very active in the civic association. The whole family loves outdoor activity, so you can often spot them biking to the Olentangy bike path, roller-blading outside, or walking their two dogs. When vacationing they enjoy skiing, hiking, wind-surfing, and soon plan to add kite-boarding to the list!
